URGE project and presentation of project activities with the production of urban fixtures

As part of our URGE project (https://urbact.eu/urge), co-financed by the European Commission under the URBACT program, Nigrad has committed to prepare a Small Scale Activity (a special physical display of project activities as a case of urban fixture production) In this case we are carrying out circular and sustainable activities in the field of construction waste. As part of this activity, we produced micro-urban fixtures from secondary raw materials and reused materials, namely benches with a bicycle rack.

Based on previous activities, in September 2021 we Nigrad put the old benches in the Nigrad's landfill in Dogoše. We removed usable wooden parts from the removed dilapidated benches from public urban areas and handed them over to a carpenter's workshop for renovation. The concrete part of the benches was demolished, crushed, and prepared for reuse as secondary raw material (SRM).

A tender for the preparation of the architectural design and the project plan was also carried out, and a designer was selected. Based on the project plan, and based on previous research in the joint CINDERELA project (Horizon 2020 Program), the Slovenian National Building and Civil Engineering Institute – ZAG prepared a recipe for the construction of a concrete base.

Based on the public tender we selected a contractor for the metal framework activities and handed over a metal frame consisting of scrap metal profiles. We also approached the production of a wooden part of the formwork, consisting of waste wooden formwork panels.

At the end of October 2021, the final production of the bench was carried out and first benches were put on the locations.

Following the adopted guidelines of the mid-term EU strategies and the mid-term strategies of Maribor in the field of circular economy and sustainable urban development, we at Nigrad are actively looking for opportunities to expand our operations. Thus, in the field of processing and reuse of secondary raw materials and production of new products based on SRM (Secondary Raw Materials), we see a great business opportunity to expand our practices and business to a relatively unexplored and technologically demanding sector that deals with secondary material in real-world situations that are very limited by construction and environmental legislation. And one such successful example is certainly the production of micro-urban fixtures from secondary raw materials and reused building materials.
